1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-028
Error
Description
Displaying a triple-punched mintmark described as D/D/D East, lower serif, RPM-028 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-671/DMR-039, the die progresses through four stages. Stage A: EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B (MDS): die scratch from 9 toward die, die crack on forehead, die chips on columns 1, 2, and 12, die chip on right cornice, die chip at left base tip. Stage C (LMDS): numerous die scratches E-W through date, large die chip on right cornice. Stage D (LDS): obverse is LDS, die break on right cornice, die break on column 12. The lower serif displacement specifies that the triple punch is most visible on the bottom horizontal stroke of the D letterform, distinguishing this variety from RPM-025's upper serif involvement and RPM-035's similar upper serif pattern. Among the 1960-D Large Date RPM varieties, the concentration of triple-punched entries with serif-level displacement demonstrates that even small positional errors during hand punching produced measurable effects on the fine terminal strokes of the mintmark letter.
