1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-016
Error
Description
Exhibiting a triple-punched mintmark described as D/D/D North, North, RPM-016 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-654/DMR-022. The two northward offsets indicate the die maker's initial placement was too far south, requiring successive corrections upward. Four die stages track the progressive deterioration: Stage A (EDS): strong triple mintmark, reverse is EDS. Stage B (MDS): weak triple mintmark, die chip on right cornice. Stage C (LMDS): reduced to double mintmark visibility, die crack north-south in hair, die cracks on columns 1, 10, 11, and 12, die chip on east side of left leg of R of AMERICA. Stage D (LDS): obverse is LDS, die chip on right base. The transition from triple to double mintmark visibility between Stages B and C illustrates how die wear preferentially erodes the shallowest punch impression first, leaving the deeper secondary punch visible longer than the tertiary one. Triple-punched mintmarks document a three-step correction process that occurred less frequently than standard D/D repunches, making RPM-016 a noteworthy entry among the 1960-D Large Date RPM roster.
