Description

Spanning four die stages under VarietyVista designation UVC-653/DMR-021, RPM-015 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. The secondary mintmark weakens progressively across the die's service life, creating a clear diagnostic gradient for staging individual specimens. Stage A (EDS): strong secondary mintmark, reverse is MDS. Stage B (MDS): light die crack east of V.D.B., die chip at right eave tip. Stage C (LMDS): medium secondary mintmark, die scratches north-south through date, small die chip on left side of T of CENT. Stage D (LDS): weak secondary mintmark, light die crack in hair above ear, die chip at top of right cornice. The year 1960 holds special significance in Lincoln cent collecting because a deliberate mid-year hub change created two distinct subtypes — Large Date and Small Date — at both Philadelphia and Denver. All RPM varieties numbered 015 and above on the 1960-D Large Date reflect the sheer volume of working dies Denver consumed during the first production phase, each receiving its mintmark by hand in a process where positional imprecision was an inherent possibility.
