1960-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-007
Error
Description
Displaying a triple-punched mintmark described as D/D/D west, west, RPM-007 is a repunched mintmark variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-645/DMR-013, this variety progresses through four die stages. Stage A presents the triple secondary mintmark at its strongest, offering collectors the most diagnostic view of all three D impressions before die wear begins to erode the secondary and tertiary punches. Stage B shows the repunch at moderate die state with developing surface markers. Stage C advances the deterioration further. By Stage D, the die reaches its later production phase with accumulated wear features. Like RPM-004, this variety records a D/D/D triple punch with two westward offsets, indicating the die maker's initial mintmark placement was too far east and required two successive corrections toward the west. The recurrence of westward correction on multiple 1960-D dies suggests a possible systematic tendency in the mintmark punching setup at Denver during this production period. Triple-punched mintmarks are prized by RPM specialists because the additional secondary impression provides more complex diagnostic geometry than a standard D/D repunch, and they document a three-step correction process that was relatively uncommon in normal die preparation.
