1960-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
Error
Description
Showing a spread to the south on the 0 of the date along with a close counterclockwise spread on the E of WE, WDDO-006 is a doubled die obverse variety on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. The Wexler designation is 1960-D 1¢ WDDO-006. Several obverse die markers aid identification: a short die gouge protrudes from the right side of the 9, a die scratch extends north from the top of the 1, and parallel die scratches extend NW from the upper left 1 and the upper left 9 in the date. On the reverse, a vertical die scratch can be found at the bottom of the second Memorial bay, and two parallel die scratches extend SE from the bottom of the Memorial above the O in ONE. The combination of southward spread on the date and counterclockwise rotation on WE suggests a complex hub misalignment involving both translational and rotational offset between impressions. As a Large Date variety, WDDO-006 was produced from the original hub design used at the start of Denver's 1960 cent run, before the celebrated Small Date hub entered service and redirected collector attention to the newer subtype.
