1959 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-009

Description

1959-D WRPM-009 is a repunched mint mark on the 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as D/D/D/D South, South, & North: three extra D impressions, two to the south and one to the north. For the obverse, Stage A shows lathe marks along the rim under the bust, and a short NW/SE scratch beneath the right side of the mint mark. Stage B: the Stage A markers have worn away; scratches leave the 1 of the date on its right side, heading NE; a light E/W crack sits over the designer's initials; and the north secondary mint mark is weaker, with separation now visible between the primary and secondary mint marks. Stage C: the Stage B scratches are a little weaker, the crack at the initials is stronger, and the north secondary is very weak. Stage D: the Stage B scratches are weaker still, the crack at the initials carries a few chips, and the north secondary has worn away. Stage E: a crack runs NE from the ear into the head and then bends slightly east; NE/SW scratches lie in the field on both sides, nearer the profile; a long N/S scratch sits under the beard; NE/SW scratches cross the back of the neck; and the B in LIBERTY has a chip in its lower cavity. Stage F: heavy abrasion shows at the 19 of the date, in the upper right field, and between the jacket's back and RTY of LIBERTY, and also inside the ear and at the temple; the beard scratch is gone; a very weak second crack runs NE/SW above the first crack on the head; and the crack over the initials is stronger. Stage G: the Y in LIBERTY has a scratch running NE off its right fork; the second head crack is stronger and now meets the NE side of the lower crack, which has grown longer. Stage H: the Stage G scratches remain; the lower head crack is lightly chipped at the ear; the crack over the initials is longer and heavily chipped; and the mint marks show strong separation. Reverse, Stage A: a chip on the left base tip, and a die chip (dot) in the field beside the Memorial base, left of its upper left side. Stage B: the N and E of ONE give off scratches running WNW and NW; others head N by W off the roof's right end and the right cornice; an irregular E/W scratch lies above the right roof and right cornice; a chip sits near the middle of column twelve; a long SSE scratch leaves the Memorial base at its lower right; and a die clash shows at the top of bay eight. Stage C: the Stage B markers remain, joined by a crack along the upper right cornice that continues down the right eave, and a short N/S gouge in the field near the lower left of the T in CENT. Stage D: the Stage B and C markers are still there, except the irregular scratches over the roof and cornice; the chipped crack on column twelve is longer; and column one has a crack, with a die chip (dot) sitting in the field to its left, near the lower part of that column. Stage E comes from a new die, the second reverse: a light E/W scratch over URIB of PLURIBUS; a scratch linking the first T in STATES (lower right) with the first U in PLURIBUS (upper left); a small chip at the upper left of the O of ONE; and a short N/S scratch near the upper right of the C in AMERICA. Stage F: heavy abrasion across most of PLURIBUS UNUM; the scratch from the first T of STATES and the one at the C in AMERICA remain, but the scratch over PLURIBUS is gone; and a chip appears at the top of column twelve. Stage G comes from a third reverse die, with an ENE scratch from the rim under the center of the N of CENT. Stage H: that Stage G scratch is still present. Lloyd Hanson submitted Stage A, Stage C, Stage E and Stage H; John Bordner Stage B, Stage D and Stage G; and Ben Peters Stage F. CONECA lists it as RPM #9 and Crawford as CRPM-003, and its Coppercoins number is 1959D-1MM-009. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
