1959 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

1959-D WRPM-008 is a repunched mint mark on the 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as D/D Northeast, with the secondary D northeast of the primary. Obverse, Stage A: a very light N/S shoulder crack; two die chips (dots) at the upper right of the shoulder, one above the crease and one below it; and a strong secondary mint mark. Stage B: the Stage A markers are unchanged. Stage C: the shoulder crack is stronger; a large X-shaped scratch heads SE from the beard; NE/SW scratches cross the back area of the neck; a strong scratch starts at the upper front of the hair and heads NE to the first T in TRUST, meeting its left side; a weak crack runs N by E in the hair over the ear; a weak die clash shows at the 1 of the date; NNE/SSW scratches pass through LIBERTY; and the secondary mint mark is weaker. Stage D: the Stage C markers remain. Stage E: the Stage C scratches are weak. Stage F: the Stage C markers are very weak and only faint traces of the secondary mint mark are left, while the shoulder crack and the shoulder chips have both grown stronger. Reverse, Stage A: a gouge over the T of CENT, a little right of center. Stage B: a gouge running south from the rim over the O in OF, and two large chips on the upper and middle parts of column twelve. Stage C: a very strong chip covering most of column twelve; a large break on the right eave and cornice; a weaker rim gouge; and several NE/SW scratches in the upper part of the O in ONE. Stage D comes from a new reverse die: E/W scratches cross the M in AMERICA through its lower openings, and light scratches run NNW from LUR and the last U in PLURIBUS. Stage E: only a very weak scratch is left at the M in AMERICA, the other Stage D scratches having worn away; a die chip (dot) appears at the N in CENT, on its upper right; and a scratch runs SE from the upper right of the S in PLURIBUS. Stage F: all Stage D scratches are gone; the dot on the N of CENT and the scratch from the S of PLURIBUS remain; and die chips sit on the upper half of column twelve. John Bordner submitted Stage A, Stage B and Stage E, Lloyd Hanson Stage C and Stage F, and Albert B. Raddi Stage D. CONECA lists it as RPM #8, and its Coppercoins number is 1959D-1MM-008. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties. Wexler also lists it on its Top 100 RPM list.
