1959 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-007

Description

1959-D WRPM-007 is a repunched mint mark on the 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as D/D East, with the secondary D east of the primary. Obverse, Stage A: a short scratch runs south from the bottom of the vest. Stage B: many scratches going in different directions cover the upper right field, the area above the head, the right part of LIBERTY and the date; a long N by E/S by W scratch passes through the R in LIBERTY; and another long scratch goes SW from the back of the head to the T in LIBERTY. Stage C: the Stage B scratches have weakened. Stage D: those Stage B scratches are gone through abrasion; a V-shaped scratch appears at the lower left of the 1 in the date, along with N/S and NNE/SSW scratches at RTY in LIBERTY. Stage E: two short curved scratches come off the upper left of the mint mark. Some call these a north secondary D, but Wexler says they are only scratches. The Stage D markers have faded. On the reverse, Stage A has a depression at the right eave and a small die chip over the center of column one. Stage B comes from a new die, the second reverse. Scratches run NW from the upper left of the base through the U and on to the N in UNITED. On ONE, a light chipped crack sits at the top of the O; a scratch runs ENE from within the upper left of the N, and a chip sits on the N's upper right; and a crack crosses the middle horizontal bar of the E. On CENT, a light crack tops the C; a crack crosses the middle bar of the E, then turns back in a U and runs east beneath that bar; a light crack crosses the top of the E, nearer the underside of its top bar; a chip sits on the upper right of the N; a crack crosses the top of the T, nearer the underside of its crossbar; and a scratch goes NE from the upper center of the T to the Memorial base. Stage C: the Stage B scratches from the Memorial base are still there but weaker; on CENT's E, the pair of cracks has merged into one large chip; a depression lies under the right underside of the T's crossbar in CENT; and there is a depression at the right eave. Stage D comes from another new die, the third reverse, with E/W scratches through bays nine, ten and eleven and along the right side of column twelve. Stage E: only a few Stage D scratches are left, and a short but strong N/S scratch sits inside the upper center of the C in AMERICA. John Bordner submitted Stage A and Stage C, Lloyd Hanson Stage B and Stage D, and Albert B. Raddi Stage E. CONECA lists it as RPM #7, and its Coppercoins number is 1959D-1MM-007. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
