1959-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-020

Description

A triple-punched mint mark showing D/D/D South, Southeast, RPM-020 on the 1959-D Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent documents three separate impressions of the D punch — an uncommon degree of repunching that goes beyond the typical double-punched variety. Cataloged by VarietyVista (UVC-634, DMR-029), the first two impressions are visible south and to the southeast of the final D position, creating a more complex layered appearance than standard two-punch RPMs. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B is mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). The 1959 date holds special significance as the first year of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, which replaced the wheat ears design that had been in continuous use since 1909. This transition year attracts heightened collector attention, and die varieties from the inaugural Memorial Cent production carry added historical interest. Triple-punched mint marks are considerably scarcer than double-punched examples, as they required three separate applications of the hand punch — each slightly misaligned — before the die entered production.
