1959-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-014

Description

A D/D Northeast variety from the inaugural year of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, this 1959-D RPM-014 was documented by VarietyVista with four progressive die stages. Die markers UVC-628 / DMR-023: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a light die crack over V.D.B. at MDS and reverse at MDS; Stage C with a medium die crack over V.D.B. at LMDS and one large and one small die chip on column #12 at LMDS; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The V.D.B. crack progression from light to medium across stages documents gradual structural failure near Brenner's designer initials. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1959 Denver Mint issue marked the transition from the beloved wheat ears reverse to the Memorial design that would serve for the next 49 years.
