1959-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

From the inaugural year of Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse, this VarietyVista-documented 1959-D Lincoln Memorial Cent shows a D/D/D North, Rotated CCW triple-punched mintmark with extensive die deterioration. Die markers UVC-610 / DMR-005 track four stages: Stage A with obverse and reverse at EDS; Stage B with die crack over V.D.B. at MDS, die crack in hair, die crack on forehead, die crack on column #1 and 12 at MDS, and die crack on right cornice; Stage C with die break behind ear at LMDS and three die chips on column #12 at LMDS; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The ear die break and column #12 chips at Stage C indicate advanced die failure. As a first-year Memorial reverse variety, this coin documents early production die behavior on the newly introduced design. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm at the Denver Mint.
