1959-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1959-D 5-cent WRPM-003 and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #1, this Jefferson Nickel displays a D/D North repunched mintmark — the D was initially punched north of its final position before being corrected. The Jefferson Nickel, designed by Felix Schlag, was struck at the Denver Mint in cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) at 5.00 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. Die markers on the obverse include a north-northwest to south-southeast die crack at the top of the head and a die chip to the left of the lower area of that die crack. The CONECA cross-reference as RPM #1 indicates this was the first repunched mintmark cataloged for this date by the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America, suggesting it is likely the most prominent or earliest-discovered RPM for the 1959-D Jefferson Nickel. Repunched mintmarks from the late 1950s reflect the hand-punching method that would continue until the Mint began incorporating mintmarks directly into master dies in 1990. The D/D North displacement pattern, where the initial D sits slightly above the final position, is a commonly observed directional variant among Denver Mint RPMs of this era.
