Displaying a well-defined Class II distorted hub doubling, WDDR-003 on the 1959-D Jefferson Nickel shows a nice spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM with closer spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Class II doubling results from a distortion of the hub during the impression process, producing a characteristic pattern where the spread varies across different regions of the die face. Doubling. A closer examination reveals that the spread intensity increases toward the peripheral legends while the central design remains relatively unaffected—a hallmark of the distorted hub mechanism. Die markers on the reverse include die scratches through the A of STATES and a die scratch inside the small left semicircular window. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. Denver Mint regular strike. The 1959 date is notable as the year the Lincoln Memorial reverse replaced the Wheat Ears design on the cent, but Jefferson Nickels continued Felix Schlag's Monticello design unchanged.
