1959 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

From a transitional year in American numismatics, this Denver Jefferson Nickel is identified as Wexler Variety ID: 1959-D 5¢ WRPM-002, with Brian Ribar providing the diagnostic photograph. While the nickel's composition remained unchanged, 1959 saw the Lincoln Cent's reverse redesigned from wheat stalks to the Lincoln Memorial — a harbinger of evolving Mint design philosophy. Denver continued as the primary branch mint for circulating nickel production, and hand-punched mintmarks on individual working dies remained standard. The WRPM-002 designation indicates the second cataloged RPM for the 1959-D date, suggesting a modest number of dies exhibited visible repunching. Collecting strategies for Jefferson Nickel RPMs often focus on date runs illustrating the range of repunching patterns across the series, and entries like WRPM-002 fill important positions. Felix Schlag's design pairing had served the denomination for over two decades by this point. Ribar's photograph preserves the overlap pattern distinguishing this variety, enabling accurate attribution even when the secondary impression is faint.
