1956 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

The 1956 Proof Washington Quarter WDDO-005 displays a counterclockwise spread from a pivot at 6:00 visible on LIBERTY. Carrying the Wexler Variety designation 1956 25 cent Proof WDDO-005, this proof silver quarter features die markers on both sides. The obverse shows a die crack running along the base of the bust, while the reverse carries a die scratch from southwest to northeast at the top of the eagle's right wing, a die crack along the edge of the right wing below UNITED, and an unusual circle-shaped die scratch on the eagle's left wing southeast of the second A in AMERICA. This circular die scratch is a particularly distinctive marker, as perfectly circular scratches are uncommon die artifacts and make identification more straightforward than linear scratches that could be confused with other surface marks. The counterclockwise pivot from the 6:00 position creates a rotational spread pattern best observed on the letters of LIBERTY.
