1956 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Concentrating its doubling on the two primary inscriptions of Felix Schlag's obverse, DDO-004 on the 1956 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel shows medium extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY. Die markers UVC-943 and DMR-030 identify this working die. The "extra thickness" classification distinguishes this variety from spread-type doubling: rather than producing clearly separated secondary images offset from the primary, the hub re-impression landed nearly coincident with the first, broadening the letter strokes without creating visible gaps between impressions. This near-coincident doubling is characteristic of Class I (rotated) or Class III (design hub doubling) mechanisms where the displacement was minimal in magnitude but sufficient to detectably widen the affected text. Medium intensity means the thickening is discernible at moderate magnification, particularly on the vertical strokes of LIBERTY and the fine serifs of IN GOD WE TRUST. The 1956 nickel was struck in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) at the Philadelphia Mint without a mintmark. DMR-030's high number indicates extensive die marker documentation for 1956 Jefferson Nickel varieties, reflecting the date's popularity among variety researchers.
