1956 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010

Description

Designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die variety, this 1956 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel WDDO-010 exhibits very strong Class VI distended hub doubling — one of the more dramatic doubling mechanisms, where the hub distorts under pressure to produce extra thickness rather than a clean secondary image. The doubling is most pronounced on the lower portions of IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY, with lesser but visible effects on the star and date. This is a COMBO variety: the reverse die is attributed as WDDR-034, meaning both sides carry hub doubling from separate hubbing events. Obverse die markers include a die dot west-northwest of the 6 in the date and a strong north-south die scratch between the lower 5 and 6. The COMBO designation significantly enhances this variety's appeal, as doubled dies on both obverse and reverse of the same coin are uncommon. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar in the Wexler reference system. Felix Schlag's Jefferson Nickel, struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, entered its eighteenth year of production in 1956. The "Best Of" recognition places WDDO-010 among the most collectible Jefferson Nickel doubled dies cataloged to date.
