Description

Documented by VarietyVista with internal tracking code UVC-547 and die marriage reference DMR-004, this 1956-D Jefferson Nickel carries a D/D East repunched mintmark designation where the initial D punch was positioned slightly to the west of its final corrected location, leaving the remnant of the first impression visible to the east (right) of the primary D. Die stage documentation tracks three states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C where both reverse and obverse reach late die state. The confirmed LDS for both dies in Stage C establishes that this die pair was utilized through its complete service life before retirement, and collectors examining late die state specimens should account for the progressive softening of the overlapping D impressions that occurs as die wear accumulates. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Denver Mint in 1956, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter.
