Description
Few dates in American numismatics attract more scrutiny than the 1955 proof Lincoln Wheat Cent. Attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1955 1¢ Pr WDDO-006), this proof issue shows Class II hub doubling spread towards center on the date, LIBERTY, and hair at top of head, with tripling on IGWT. The reverse is also a doubled die, listed as 1955 1¢ Pr WDDR-005 — making this a dual doubled die coin. Obverse Stage A: two parallel die scratches south from bottom of ear, diagonal die scratch WNW to ESE above the 2nd T of TRUST, strong die scratch NW to SE in vest NW of bowtie. Stage B: all Stage A markers gone except the vest scratch. As a proof struck on polished planchets with mirror fields, the pairing of obverse and reverse doubling on one die set is a scarce occurrence that elevates this variety among Wheat Cent specialists.
