1955 Proof Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1955 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1955 proof Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Both upper wheat ears, both stems, the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM and both dots show a very strong Class II spread toward the center, and E PLURIBUS UNUM is in fact closely tripled. ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA show slight doubling as well. Obverse Stage A has a short vertical scratch left of the bottom of the 1 and a long NNW-SSE scratch running left of the ear and down into the neck. By Stage B both scratches are abraded away. Reverse Stage A has a gouge (dot) inside the lower part of CENT's N and a gouge (dot) north of the ES of STATES. On Stage B the details are slightly weaker, but the markers remain. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 7-R-II. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
