Description

Bearing the 11th over mint mark catalog number for the 1955-D date, this VarietyVista-documented Jefferson Nickel exhibits a D/S over mint mark where a Denver D punch was applied over a previously placed San Francisco S, documenting inter-facility die transfer. Die markers UVC-413 / DMR-014 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed); Stage D with light die scratches northwest-southeast on the reverse at VLDS and obverse at VLDS. The four-stage progression through VLDS indicates extended service for this die. Over mint marks involve two entirely different letter punches, unlike repunched mintmarks which repeat the same letter. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1955-D is one of the most prolific dates for D/S over mint mark varieties in the Jefferson Nickel series.
