1955-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Attributed by John A. Wexler, this second doubled die reverse for the 1955 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel is a Class II distorted hub doubled die showing very close doubling on UNUM and AMERICA. Class II doubling results from angular misalignment between the hub and working die during a secondary hubbing operation, producing distorted rather than linearly shifted design elements. The very close spacing of the doubled image means careful examination under magnification is required to distinguish the genuine hub doubling from die deterioration effects. Distinctive obverse die markers include X-shaped die scratches below the L of LIBERTY and a die scratch between the lower portions of the two 5s in the date — an unusual marker that references the repeated digit in 1955. On the reverse, a slanted die scratch appears above the M of MONTICELLO, accompanied by two slanted die scratches above the right roof of the building.
