1955-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
Attributed by John A. Wexler himself — the pioneering researcher whose systematic doubled die cataloging established the framework used across modern variety numismatics — this 1955 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel carries Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with a close spread on STATES OF AMERICA on the reverse. Class II doubling originates from a physical distortion in the hub, producing a spread pattern distinct from the rotational geometry of Class I varieties. The close spacing means the secondary impression sits very near the primary, requiring magnification to distinguish from die deterioration effects. Die markers anchor the attribution: the obverse carries a scratch from the chin toward GOD, while the reverse shows scratches near the arch and porch of Monticello. Denver struck 74.4 million nickels in 1955, providing a substantial production base. Wexler's personal attribution lends this die particular provenance within the variety collecting community. Cataloged as 1955-D 5c WDDR-001.
