1955-D Over Mint Mark OMM-005

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1955-D Jefferson Nickel is an over mint mark variety where a Denver D punch was applied over a previously existing mintmark impression, indicating die reassignment between mint facilities. Die markers UVC-407 / DMR-008: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with die scratches southwest from FIVE, die scratches above left roof, die scratches south from M of UNUM, and obverse at LDS. The extensive late-state reverse scratches radiating from multiple inscription areas document widespread die surface degradation. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design was struck at the Denver Mint. Over mint marks differ from repunched mintmarks in that two different letter punches are involved, making OMM varieties evidence of inter-facility die logistics rather than simple punch misalignment.
