1955-D Over Mint Mark OMM-004

Cataloged by VarietyVista, this 1955-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits an over mint mark variety documenting inter-facility die transfer, where a Denver D punch was applied over a previously placed different mintmark. Die markers UVC-406 / DMR-007 track four progressive stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with light die scratches East-West through the mintmark area at LDS, die scratches under PLURIBUS, and die scratches in front of face at LDS; Stage D with reverse and obverse at VLDS. The concentration of die scratches through the mintmark area at Stage C may relate to attempts to obscure the underlying mintmark or to general die surface degradation. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design was struck at the Denver Mint. Multiple OMM varieties for 1955-D suggest systematic die sharing between facilities during this production year.
