1955-D Over Mint Mark OMM-002

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, this 1955 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel is an over mint mark variety where a D punch was applied over a previously placed mintmark of a different letter. Die markers UVC-404 / DMR-005: Stage A EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B LMDS with strong die scratches above the left roof of Monticello and die scratches north-south in front of Jefferson's face; Stage C reverse and obverse LDS. Over mint marks differ from repunched mintmarks because they involve two different letter punches rather than multiple applications of the same letter. The LMDS Stage B die scratches across both faces suggest surface handling marks acquired during the die's production life. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse remained in continuous use throughout the 1950s at all three mint facilities.
