Description
Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-501, this 1955-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits a D/S Centered over mint mark where a Denver D punch was applied directly over a previously placed San Francisco S, documenting inter-facility die transfer. Die markers UVC-403 / DMR-004 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed); Stage D with reverse and obverse at VLDS. The four-stage progression through VLDS indicates extended service life for this already anomalous die. Over mint marks differ from repunched mintmarks in that they involve two entirely different letter punches rather than repeated application of the same letter. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design was struck at Denver. The FS-501 listing confirms this as an actively sought Cherrypickers' Guide variety.
