Description

Among the final San Francisco issues of the Lincoln Wheat Cent series, this repunched mintmark shows the S punched over a previous S displaced to the east. Cataloged as UVC-530 with a die marriage rating of DMR-020, the variety reveals itself across four documented die states. Stage A exhibits fine die scratches running north to south through LIBERTY at early die state, with the reverse also in early condition. By Stage B the obverse advances to early-mid state, and a minute die chip appears in the upper left wheat grains on the reverse. Stage C brings the obverse to mid die state along with a large die chip in the lower left wheat grains — a distinctive marker that aids attribution. Stage D at late die state remains unconfirmed. The San Francisco Mint produced wheat cents through 1955, making the 1954-S one of the penultimate issues. Repunched mintmarks from this era occurred because individual letter punches were used to apply mintmarks by hand, and slight misalignment on the initial impression required correction.
