1954-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-011

Description

Showing an S/S East repunch, this 1954-S Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-011 is cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-527 and DMR-017. Three die states document progressive deterioration: Stage A is EDS but unconfirmed. Stage B reveals mid-die-state markers including a light curved-up die gouge from the back of the shoulder, a light die crack on T of CENT, and a light crack in the right wheat grains. Stage C advances to LDS with general obverse deterioration, a die crack in the left wheat grains, and a small die chip within the left wheat grains. The progression from a single reverse crack at Stage B to cracks on both wheat stalk areas by Stage C shows how die fatigue spreads from initial stress points. San Francisco struck 96,190,000 cents in 1954 — moderate by mid-century standards but sufficient to generate numerous die pairs, each carrying potential for mintmark repunching during the hand-punched mintmark era.
