Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-522 and die marriage record DMR-012, this 1954 San Francisco Lincoln wheat cent carries a repunched mintmark where the S was impressed into the die more than once, leaving overlapping or displaced letter traces near the mintmark position. Three documented die stages track the life of this die pair. In Stage A, an early die state, die gouges are present on Lincoln's eyebrow and forehead while the reverse also shows early die state characteristics. By Stage B, both the obverse and reverse have progressed to mid-die state with the early markers worn down. Stage C reveals a light die crack developing on Lincoln's forehead as the die enters its late state, accompanied by a die crack across the shoulder extending to the lapel and another die crack running through the left wheat lines. San Francisco wheat cents from the mid-1950s saw limited production compared to Philadelphia and Denver, and repunched mintmark varieties from these final years of the wheat reverse design hold particular appeal for specialists assembling attribution sets.
