1954 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1954 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1954 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. Strong extra thickness appears on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, and extra thickness also shows on the date and LIBERTY. On the obverse, right of the lower 9 three parallel WNW-to-ESE scratches run; beside the L in LIBERTY, right of its top, there is a short vertical gouge; between the B and E of LIBERTY three parallel NNW-to-SSE scratches run; and a short vertical gouge sits right of the center of the T. On the reverse, a crack descends the eagle's right wing, another starts at the S in PLURIBUS and runs down the upper part of the left wing, and a scratch heads NW off the first A in AMERICA from its bottom left. Tony Russo submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
