1954 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Documented by the Wexler Team as 1954 25-cent WDDR-002, this Washington Quarter variety shows counterclockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 7 o'clock on the die face. The CCW rotation from that lower-left anchor produced visible doubling on STATES OF AMERICA and DOLLAR — elements in the upper and central portions of John Flanagan's reverse, where angular displacement from a 7 o'clock pivot reaches peak magnitude. Photographs were taken by Ken Potter, the renowned numismatic photographer and researcher whose detailed imaging has contributed to documenting hundreds of die varieties across U.S. coinage. No other cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation. The 1954 Washington Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver at 6.25 grams during the final decade of silver circulating coinage. The pivot geometry means elements farther from the 7 o'clock position show greater displacement, while those near the pivot remain nearly undoubled. Examination of STATES OF AMERICA and DOLLAR under 7x magnification will reveal the CCW spread diagnostic of this Class V variety.
