1954 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Medium spread across multiple design elements — IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the date, and the ribbon end — makes this 1954 Washington Quarter DDO-002 a variety with broad diagnostic coverage. Hub displacement affecting four separate zones simultaneously indicates the secondary impression shifted significantly enough to manifest on both the upper and lower portions of the obverse die, producing a spread that collectors can verify at multiple points during examination. Die markers UVC-0837 and DMR-011 identify this variety within the VarietyVista catalog system. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at Early Die State preserves the doubling at its sharpest, Stage B at Mid Die State captures intermediate wear, and Stage C at Late Die State remains unconfirmed. The 1954 Philadelphia Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver composition during the final decade of silver-content circulating coinage, and John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington provided a detailed obverse design where medium spread on the motto, LIBERTY, and date becomes visible under magnification. The ribbon end doubling offers an often-overlooked secondary checkpoint below the main bust truncation.
