Description

Moderate extra thickness on USA, EPU, QUARTER DOLLAR, and lower leaves and stems marks this 1954 Washington Quarter doubled die reverse, accompanied by extensive die cracking on both sides. Attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1954 25¢ WDDR-005), the obverse shows heavy E/W die crack across top of head, die crack across base of bust, NE/SW die cracks on nose and eyebrow, old N/S die scratch above bow, short die scratch NW from forehead, die gouge right of T in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a long die crack across eagle's right wing, die crack across top of eagle's left wing to S in PLURIBUS, old E/W die scratch left of last S in STATES, die gouge left of E in EPU, die gouge above leaves left of arrowheads. The prevalence of cracks on both obverse and reverse indicates this die pair was in late die state, and the accumulation provides abundant attribution points for this 90% silver Washington Quarter.
