Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1954 1¢ WDDO-001 and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1954P-1DO-003, this Lincoln Wheat Cent features an extra eyelid visible south of the primary eyelid — a particularly compelling doubled die manifestation that affects one of the most detailed features of Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait, where the fine curvature of the eyelid line doubles into two parallel arcs that are detectable under moderate magnification. Obverse die markers include multiple die scratches between the bust and the rim, a heavy die gouge northeast of the 4 in the date, and a die scratch southwest of the U in TRUST — three diagnostic points distributed across different zones of the obverse that collectively fingerprint this specific working die. The reverse carries an extensive marker set: light die scratches running roughly vertically through PLURIBUS UNUM, NE in ONE, and ENT in CENT, along with a die scratch running south-southwest from the C in CENT to the right wheat stem, and light die scratches between the upper right wheat lines and the rim. The Coppercoins cross-reference as 1954P-1DO-003 confirms independent documentation in a second major attribution system. The 1954 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in the standard bronze composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The wheat ears reverse, designed as a Mint creation, served from 1909 through 1958. Extra eyelid doubled dies are among the more visually accessible doubled die varieties for Lincoln cent collectors because the eyelid's fine curvature makes even modest displacement immediately apparent, and the facial detail area naturally draws examiner attention during attribution work.
