Progressing through the 1954 Philadelphia cud sequence, CU-1C-1954-04R occupies the fourth documented position. Rim Cuds present a distinctive appearance: because they represent the loss of part of the die's rim gutter, the result is a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course rather than a broad interior cud. This subtlety can make Rim Cuds harder to spot in casual examination, but experienced error collectors learn to run a fingertip along the rim feeling for the characteristic raised step where the normal rim gives way to the rim cud's interruption. Philadelphia's 1954 Wheat Cent production was part of the final five-year stretch of the series, and dies from this period benefited from decades of manufacturing refinement — yet no process improvement can prevent the fundamental physics of fatigue failure at a structural discontinuity.
