Description
The "R" suffix in CU-1C-1954-01R marks a reverse-die cud in the Cuds on Coins numbering. This 1954 Philadelphia Wheat Cent is the first of three Rim Cuds documented for the date, forming a small but coherent group of die failures from the mother mint. Philadelphia struck cents without a mintmark throughout the Wheat Cent era, and its 1954 output was substantial — placing heavy demands on the die inventory. A Rim Cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter, appearing on the coin as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course — typically narrower than a full interior cud but unmistakably present as a disruption of the normal rim profile. The absence of a mintmark on Philadelphia issues means attribution relies entirely on the cud's position and the coin's die markers, making careful documentation essential for catalog accuracy.
