1953-D Over Mint Mark WOMM-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team, this 1953-D Washington Quarter exhibits a D/D/D West, West, and S North over mint mark, where early die state specimens suggest the possibility of an additional S mintmark beneath the D punches. Cross-referenced as CONECA OMM #1, Cherrypickers' FS-25-1953D-601 (022.3), Breen #4367, and Wexler Variety ID 1953-D 25-cent WOMM-001. Originally listed as WRPM-002, it does not appear to be the same OMM listed in The RPM Book. Obverse die markers at Stage A include a die crack running E/W across the head and a light die crack on the front of the bust; Stage B extends the crack into the field on both sides. Reverse die markers at Stage A show a light die crack on the contour of the left-side wing along the N in UNITED and another at the left-side wing tip. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.3 mm, John Flanagan's design was produced at the Denver Mint.
