1953-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Showing a D/D West displacement, this fifth documented repunched mint mark for the 1953-D Roosevelt Dime captures an era when mint marks were individually hand-punched into working dies, making repunched impressions an inevitable byproduct of the process. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-242 and DMR-006, three die stages document the variety's progression. Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die-state develops numerous east-west die scratches across the lower reverse alongside numerous die scratches on the obverse. Stage C at late die state shows two die scratches running north from the N of ONE through the first U of PLURIBUS, along with a large die break on the nose — a dramatic late-stage marker. The 1953-D Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver composition at the Denver Mint, part of the silver dime production that continued through 1964 before the switch to copper-nickel clad coinage. Roosevelt Dime RPMs from the early 1950s are sought by variety specialists who value the clarity of westward repunch displacement visible under moderate magnification on well-preserved specimens.
