1953-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-022
Error
Description
RPM-022 on the 1953-D Lincoln Wheat Cent is a VarietyVista-cataloged repunched mintmark cataloged UVC-475 and DMR-025. The D mintmark on this Denver issue was applied at least twice to the working die, leaving a secondary impression that defines the attribution. The variety's documented die stages progress into a well-characterized late-die-state condition: Stage C (LDS) carries three specific markers — a die crack running north-to-south from the shoulder area to the rim, a die crack on the shoulder area east of the V.D.B. designer's initials, and a small die chip on the T of CENT. The V.D.B.-area die crack is particularly notable as it references Victor David Brenner's monogram on Lincoln's shoulder, providing a precise anatomical and typographic reference point for stage identification. The die chip on T of CENT supplements the crack evidence at Stage C. The 1953-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at Denver. The LDS die cracks — especially the shoulder crack near V.D.B. — are the most visually accessible secondary diagnostics for RPM-022 and serve as naked-eye confirmation on well-preserved examples when the repunched mintmark itself is the primary attribution target.
