1953-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-021

Description

Twenty-first repunched mintmark cataloged by VarietyVista for the 1953 Denver Lincoln Wheat Cent, RPM-021 shows a D/D West displacement documented under UVC-474 and DMR-024. Stage C in late die state develops one of the most extensive crack networks among Wheat Cent RPM varieties: a heavy die crack crosses the forehead, with additional cracks from the lower right of LIBERTY, over the VDB initials, northwest on the shoulder, and north-south on the lapel. Reverse damage includes a die chip on the upper left wheat grains and another chip on the T of CENT. This constellation of six distinct cracks and two chips documents a die that served far beyond typical retirement thresholds, accumulating structural failures across nearly every major design element. The 1953-D was struck at Denver during the final decade of the Wheat Ear reverse, replaced by the Lincoln Memorial in 1959. The westward displacement of the secondary D creates visible overlapping serifs to the left of the primary mintmark, and the extraordinary late die state cracking provides collectors with dramatic staging markers alongside the primary RPM.
