1953-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-018

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1953-D RPM-018 Lincoln Wheat Cent displays D/D Northeast. Die markers UVC-471 / DMR-021 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with both obverse and reverse at MDS; Stage C with obverse at LDS featuring a medium die chip in the upper left wheat grains. The chip in the wheat grains is characteristic of late-stage wear on the Wheat Cent reverse, where fine parallel lines concentrate striking stress and are prone to chipping. Struck at Denver in 1953, this cent is 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams at 19.05 mm diameter. The 1953-D had one of the larger Denver mintages in the final Wheat Cent decade, with over 700 million pieces requiring hundreds of individually mintmarked working dies.
