1953-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-016

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under die markers UVC-469 and DMR-019, the 1953-D Lincoln wheat cent RPM-016 documents a repunched D mintmark across three confirmed die stages with progressive reverse deterioration. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed. Stage B shows the obverse at mid-die state while the reverse exhibits more advanced deterioration: a die chip on the stem and right crossbar of the T of CENT, a die crack east of the T of CENT, and a die chip outside the middle right wheat grains, placing the reverse at late die state. By Stage C, the obverse has reached late die state, and the reverse shows stronger die chips at very late die state. The accelerating reverse breakdown from Stage B through Stage C provides a clear progression for die state identification. Denver Mint cents from the early 1950s were produced in large numbers, and repunched mintmarks from this period are well-documented across the wheat cent series. The die chips on the reverse denomination, particularly around the T of CENT, serve as reliable secondary markers when the mintmark area itself shows wear.
