Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent provides a clear three-stage demonstration of mintmark visibility attenuation alongside developing die deterioration. Die markers UVC-465 / DMR-015: Stage A with strong secondary mintmark at EDS and light die scratches north-south on reverse at EDS; Stage B with medium secondary mintmark at MDS, light die scratch southwest from mintmark, and die scratches east-west on reverse at MDS; Stage C with very weak secondary mintmark at LDS, die clash at throat and behind head, and die chip on T of CENT at LDS. The systematic progression from strong to medium to very weak makes this variety ideal for studying how striking pressure gradually flattens displaced mintmark impressions. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1953-D was produced with a mintage exceeding 700 million pieces.
