1953-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-012

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-012 features both die clashes and a die break across its four-stage production history. Die markers UVC-464 / DMR-014: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die scratch from lower 5 to mintmark at EMDS, a die gouge northeast from tie, and a die break on T of CENT at LMDS; Stage C with strong die clash at throat and behind head at MDS, and strong die clash through N of CENT at LDS; Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The strong die clashes at Stage C — on both the obverse portrait and reverse inscription — document an incident where the dies struck each other without a planchet between them, transferring design elements between faces. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1953-D represents mid-century Denver Mint wheat cent production.
