1953-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-011

Description

RPM-011 on the 1953-D Lincoln Wheat Cent records a northward repunched mintmark designated D/D North, with two distinct UVC die pairings reflecting a reverse die change during the coin's production run. Stage A (EMDS) is cataloged UVC-3424 and DMR-039, representing the early-to-mid die state before the reverse die was replaced. Stage B marks the reverse die change: cataloged UVC-463 and DMR-013, this stage develops a die clash at the throat area (MDS). Stage C (LDS) on the UVC-463 die shows a light die crack in the hair, with the reverse advancing to VLDS — a very late die state indicating the die was used well past its prime before retirement. The two-reverse-die structure means that Stage A and Stages B–C coins are fundamentally different die marriages sharing the same obverse, making complete set building for RPM-011 a two-coin endeavor. The 1953-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at Denver in the final years of the wheat reverse before the Memorial design replaced it in 1959. The D mintmark appears on the obverse below the date on all Wheat Cent issues from this era.
