Description

Documented by VarietyVista under die tracking codes UVC-460 and DMR-010, the 1953-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-008 is a three-stage repunched mintmark variety. As with several VarietyVista-cataloged RPMs for this date, the specific repunching direction is not noted in available reference data — attribution relies on identifying the secondary mintmark impression under magnification alongside the stage-specific die markers. Stage A (EDS) is unconfirmed pending additional specimens. Stage B (MDS) sees die markers develop on both the obverse and reverse sides of the coin simultaneously. Stage C (LDS) is the most diagnostically rich state: on the obverse, a die crack runs from the head to the rim at E of E in WE, and a second crack appears from the tie to the lapel and on to the rim; the reverse develops a die chip at the T of CENT. The Stage C CENT chip and the two-crack obverse system make late-stage examples readily identifiable. Collectors building a complete die-stage run of RPM-008 should prioritize finding Stage B specimens, which bridge the EDS and the dramatic Stage C die failure.
