1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Fifth and final repunched mintmark cataloged for the 1951-S Franklin Half Dollar, RPM-005 completes the set with another S over S repunched to the south — the third southward-displaced variety alongside RPMs 002 and 004. Paired with reverse design variant RDV-001b, the same reverse type as RPMs 003 and 004, this variety closes out the densest RPM concentration in the early San Francisco Franklin Half Dollar production. Having five RPM dies for a single date-mint combination speaks to the challenges of hand-punching mintmarks during this period — at least five San Francisco-bound working dies received S impressions that required correction, and the predominance of southward displacement (three of five) suggests a systematic tendency in the punch operator's technique. Each of the three southward-displaced RPMs (002, 004, 005) must be differentiated by examining the precise displacement distance, the degree of overlap between initial and final S curves, and any additional die characteristics unique to each working die. Struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm during the Franklin Half Dollar's fourth year of production. This RPM-005 represents the final documented repunching for the 1951-S, completing a set that ranges from the westward RPM-003 to four southward varieties of varying displacement characteristics.
