1951 (S) Franklin Half Dollar - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1951-S WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1951-S Franklin half dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. The letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM (EPU) show strong notches, and the eagle has a strong spread to the east. The bell yoke's top right side and the clapper's left side are doubled too. On the obverse, several SSW-to-NNE scratches lie right of the lips and chin, and there is die pitting right of the date's second 1. On the reverse, over the middle of UNUM's M is a small gouge, PLURIBUS's second U has a short scratch running NNW off its top left, and the bell holder has a scratch heading SSE from its bottom left. Another scratch arcs WSW to ENE through the upper part of the S mint mark. Tony Russo submitted the variety, and Crawford lists it as CDDR-001. Wexler notes that WDDR-002 and WDDR-003, as first listed, were deleted because both turned out to be examples of WDDR-001.
