Description

Catalogued by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0768 and DMR-003, the 1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-007 is a Washington Silver Quarter variety produced at the San Francisco Mint. The die progressed through three identified stages. Stage A is early die state, unconfirmed. Stage B brings both the reverse and obverse to mid die state simultaneously. Stage C, the late die state, provides the most specific characterization: both reverse and obverse are LDS, the mintmark punch relationship is identified as S/S North (the secondary impression displaced to the north of the primary), and the obverse die is identified as ODV-005, carrying the SDO designation. The S/S North description pinpoints the direction of the underlying ghost mintmark, which appears north of the accepted punch — a detail that helps distinguish RPM-007 from other S repunch varieties of this date. Washington Quarters of the 1932-1964 silver series were struck in 90% silver, designed by John Flanagan. San Francisco mintmarks of this era were punched individually into each working die, and the minor positional variations that resulted make RPM varieties a natural and well-populated collecting category.
